A defence official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.
He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every areas of official operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
