Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
